Meme #2: Create a Fantasy Monster
Here I am again, running out of ideas for blog posts, so I've come up with another meme. The rules are to describe your own fantasy monster in a well-written paragraph, just as it would appear in a story. It can be from a story you've already written, one in the works, or an idea you have for a future project. And don't forget to link back to this post, of course!
I'll start with a paragraph from my story "Hex Moon," which is part of the Avatar world.
In the center of the clearing, kneeling beside a glowing
stone, was a massive man-shaped creature with crimson,
sinewy flesh. Its hair was long, braided and slick with
grease, and razor-sharp spurs lined its muscular
arms—which were broader than Q'La's head. A mass of
smooth, reddish-brown tentacles writhed on its back, like a
nest of vipers. When it turned its head sideways—in the
direction of the children—as if it searched for something,
Q'La noticed two long fangs jutting from its lower jaw.
Although she had never seen one before, she knew what it was
from accounts in the old stories: a Maug.
This time I'm going to go ahead and tag people, but anyone can take up an open tag if they wish.
I hereby tag:

Great description, especially the hair!
Thanks for not tagging me, since the only monsters in my fiction are of the human variety. And they can be bad enough!
Yikes, thanks for giving my nightmares extra ammunition!
Great monster description. Too great, if you ask me.
Ooooh, great description of a creepy critter! Loved the tentacles. :-D
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
Bunnygirl: I kind of figured. I understand that your fiction still falls in the realm of "speculative," but I haven't seen anything that could actually be called "fantasy." Yes, human monsters can be very bad. Some even worse that thing in my story!
Crabby: Hi! Thanks for stopping by. And you've made my day, because that's exactly the kind of effect I was going for (something horrific in a fantasy setting).
Wow, Thomma, you're fast! Thank you!
Michael,
I have just the monster...but it's more than a paragraph...
Can I cheat?
That's cool with me, David. I can't wait to read it!
Tossed a monster on the blog last night - forgot to comment here, though. Thanks for shivering, Mike! ;)
Your very welcome, Howard! Thanks for stopping by.
This (out of context, of course) from Book One of my six-book series.
For several seconds everyone appeared unable to move. Evoking the name of Mala had stunned the gathering into silence. But in place of the monster, the Warlish witch stepped into view, and the eerie quiet was disrupted by a noise far more unpleasant and painful than any scream Podhana could have conjured.
It began as a low growl, like that of a large predator sighting prey. Interspersed were tiny cackles and high-pitched profanities. The bizarre mixture of sounds bred despair, as if confirming the worst fears of all living beings: Hell was the only true reality and eternal suffering the fate of all.
The effect was widespread. Several of the noble ones, temporarily loosed from the grasp of their captors, bent over and vomited. Sôbhana and the other Asçkhas spat, and then reflexively drew their curved swords. Kusala bared his teeth and growled in return, one dangerous beast squaring off with another. But Torg held up his hand, as if to stay them all.

Thanks, Jim. I like the Warlish Witch almost as much as Mala. Good job!
